WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
After listing (almost) all the abandonned/vacant buildings in Portimão's city center, we have made a small selection of sites, depending on their location, their state, their potential, the quantity of work needed to clear up the space and the good will of the owners.
We are looking for projects to animate one (or several) of these sites for at least a full day (or several half-days) during this one week festival. It can be night projects as well as daytime, which is why some of the sites will be adapted to both (for example an exhibition site may be transformed into an open air night cinema or concert scene).
We are looking for both:

"Passive" works of art:
Works of art that can be observed, experienced from the street. They will be done before the festival (by the artist alone or with local participants) and exhibited during the festival ; therefore not requiring the presence of the artist during the festival.

"Active" works of art:
Works of art based on the interaction between people; will require the presence of the artist to animate the site. People can be inspirationnal (ex.: they tell a story that inspires the artist who creates on the spot) or can be participants and create (workshop).
Application process:
If you wish to participate in the Turfu Festival 2021, send us an email in the box below or to turfufestivalpropostas@gmail.com with your name, a brief description of your work so far and your interest in the Festival. We will send you an application form and the list of the available sites with pictures. Then, you have until the 31st of June 2021 to send us the application form with your project for the Festival. We will announce the chosen projects during the summer.
Resources:
We are taking care of the cleaning, clearing up and basic installations on site if needed, with the help of volunteers and with as many recuperated materials as possible. Please notify us as soon as possible if you have any specific requirements regarding the site or a peculiar logistic.
The application form contains a budget and a resource section. The budget will be considered during the selection process.

Here are some thoughts the festival hopes to highlight:

Question the way we experience and look at the city and derelict buildings

Question the way we acknowledge our neighbours - what kind of relationship do we have?

Question the process of the evolution of our surroundings: what is public space? Is it an image of democraty? How are people involved in the process? How to become an "active" citizen?

Question the way art, culture and heritage are made accessible to people

Question the way children are seen in society

Question the way senior citizens are seen in society, especially in Portugal's aging countryside

Question the relationship betwen
schools and universities and the "outside world", bewteen students and the general public -
Question how knowledge and skills are transmitted

Question the recycling process as we are recycling a resource (abandonned building), and why not think of what can be done with the recuperated materials on-site
As it would only make sense to include local entities who are already currently working with the local community, please note that along with this open call, we are also in contact with associations and universities of Portimão, who will animate some of the sites.
